Top-requested features coming Spring 2019

Your ideas are coming to life this spring. We’ve listened as families using Relay have shared their experiences and let us know about features that would make Relay even more useful as a communication tool, family GPS tracker, and more—and we’ve been working to make them happen. Now they’re almost ready. Here’s a sneak peek into what you can expect.

Coming this Spring:

sos, direct chat, message history

Get SOS emergency alerts

This feature allows your child to send an emergency notification from their Relay to your smartphone. Along with the notification, you’ll also get a live update of their location so you can make sure they’re safe.

Listen to message history

Never miss a message. With this highly requested feature, you and your child will be able to listen to messages right as they arrive or hear them later with the press of a button.

One-on-one chats made easy

The Relay app is getting a makeover! In the new app, direct chats will be set up automatically so you can easily reach everyone on your account without manually setting up channels or talking to the whole group.

Coming soon:

geofencing, app only accounts

App-Only Accounts

This will allow for someone without a Relay to create an account and communicate with Relay users by receiving an invitation from the account owner. It’s perfect for grandparents, cousins, and co-parents to stay connected with their families.

Take your kid tracker game to the next level. With geofencing technology, you’ll know when your child is leaving or entering a specific location area by receiving smart alerts that you have set up—without checking your Relay app every minute.   And we’re nowhere near finished! We will continue to offer additional improvements through our software updates, so make sure you’re the first to know about new features by tuning into our email updates. You can sign up below.

  1. Wow this is incredible!!! These features are THE most important features! I’m so excited for all of them especially the non-relay app users for grandparents, non-custodial parents, cousins, etc. The emergency feature, geofencing & messages are absolutely amazing bonuses as well! These will all make relay something I can have my son use for many more years now! These would be great for the elderly… My grandmother who had dementia would’ve greatly benefited from this. I hope caretakers take advantage of relays for this purpose bc it’s so much easier than using a smartphone for the tech challenged. Thank u guys for listening & implementing so many amazing features - this makes it absolutely perfect for my son and our family…thank u thank u thank u!!!

  2. Thanks for your support! We couldn’t make any of this happen without your ideas. We are so excited to make these features available for everyone :grinning:

  3. I can’t wait for the feature to listen to past messages and app-only accounts! We just got a Relay for my grandparents and this feature will help SO much since it will mostly be used for her to contact family members on their phones running the app.

  4. Is there an estimated roll out time for these features?

  5. My relay seems to have the new features today. Too bad I can’t figure out how to use them. I have a blinking green light (2 blinks) and occasionally a sound, seems to be telling me there is a message to listen to, but I can’t seem to figure out how to get it.

  6. What software version is your Relay device at?

  8. @Fotoman2100 is correct, we pushed an app update yesterday: Relay Android and iOS App Update - v1.14 | 5/15/19 | Relay Docs

I’ve also created a new discussion thread here for any feedback, comments, or questions you may have around the new update: Relay's Latest App Update (1.14)- Share your thoughts!

You can play the message by pressing the power button on the side. That will automatically take you to the channel where the message is waiting, and then the message will automatically play. If you need to hear it again, just press the talk button once.

  9. We just pushed a few of these features via an update yesterday:

    • Simplified 1:1 chats
    • SOS emergency
    • Missed message playback for 1:1 chats
  10. These are great so far! Any idea when we will be seeing the app only account users option become available? Will we be able to send the new user a link to connect to us thru the app? This is the 1 upgrade we are anxiously awaiting so my son can talk to his father, grandparents and cousins… I want to be sure we don’t miss the rollout of this feature!

  11. Great question @Bean5669, and we’re glad you’re enjoying the new features! The app-only account feature is something we are also super excited about. We’re hard at work on it and it should be ready within the next few months.

We’ll notify users by email, here on the Neighborhood, and via social media when new updates are released. You can sign up for email at

  12. Great thanks so much we can’t wait! You guys are awesome!
